Sweet Potato Pie


Sweet Potato Pie is a key dessert in the Southern States on major holidays. Such as on Thanksgiving,Christmas, and New Years. Sweet Potatoes is also known as Ipomoea batatas. Christopher Columbus brought the Sweet Potato to America from the island of Saint Thomas.The fimiliar word for them was batatas it eventually became patata in Spanish, patae in French, and potato in English.It came about being used by people in the South during the American Revolution and the Civil War time period. Darker sweet potatoes are ideal for making pies because they are more moist and sweeter than others. They oftenly get mistaken for Yams which is actually not the same thing.Generally Yams are sweeter than a sweet potato and can be used as a substitute. The best time to buy fresh sweet potatoes is from October to January. Traditional Sweet Potato Pie is made with mashed sweet potatoes, milk, sugar and eggs, flavored with ingredients such as cinnamon,vanilla extract and nutmeg.
