Visualize Whirled Peas

Dear, Peas

I cant stand you, you disgust me, you make me sick to my stomach, and not even for a million bucks will I eat you. Why are you still considered a vegetable and people actually like you?

Did you know that peas are high in sugar? In one cup of peas, there are about 8.2 grams of sugar. Peas are also high in calories, in one cup of peas, there are about 120 calories. So, are peas healthy? Well, it depends on how you look at it. In comparison to other vegetables, peas are not the healthiest option for you. At the same time, however, peas are a much healthier than a milk chocolate candy bar or a fattening cheeseburger from McDonald's. Overall, it is safe to say that peas can be enjoyed in moderation, but it is not recommended for you to eat large amounts of peas on a frequent basis.

sincerely, Tierra Walls

p.s i guess there alright for you to a certain extent, i wont yuck some ones yum

Say What?

Its 2011 , we have a biracial president and the war is hopefully ending. But there is still racial discrimination, words that start with N and C have been deemed culturally vulgar. And yet the word oriental is still used.
To give you a little background the word 'oriental', meaning the east, has been used to describe people, furniture, art, and even salad dressing. These days, people generally call Asian people Asian not oriental, so since there's been a name change why preserve a word that holds negativity?
I don't see the problem with a store saying Asian inspired or Asian manufactured. Most labels state that they were made in China not the product of the Orient.
I just wanted to bring it to your attention Wendy's has an Oriental salad and the antique store has a special on oriental couches. Just wanted to inform you about an on going issue that plagues us all. Readers, what are you going to do to stop the injustice!?

No It Couldn't be The Cheesecake Factory

Now Friday is my little brother cake-day and we're going to the Cheesecake Factory. I was doing my blog research and found that the Cheesecake Factory had won an award for recognize restaurant heavy-hitters, and so is many others. Now I never been aware of this until now and its shocking that my favorite restaurant has been awarded three years in a row. Now if your favorite restaurant is named here am sorry to say but you will feel how I feel shocked, IHop, Cold Stone Creamy, Applebee's, Denney's, Great Steak, Morton's Poterhouse, all been awarded the same also. This been going on for three years. Eight entrees made the list this year based on their massive calorie, saturated fat and sodium counts. Now am saying that I will not stop eating there because that's mine favorite place to go eat. The meal I always ate is a "heart attack on a plate" it was the Factory Farmhouse Cheeseburger. How could this be, as am sitting here typing this blog am getting upset that my favorite meal will kill me. The cheesecake Factory been my favorite restaurant for ever since I could remember. And I didn't know that it's been a killer for years. I don't care though because I feel like it should have been in the news and and more talked about, people lives are at stake and even though am saying I am not going to stop, I am going to start coming less and maybe find something different to eat, but I am out-to-eat person and this here is like am just storing pounds and pounds of fats and salts. However am still going on Friday and I might get my usual just for the last time.

Cheat Sheet

I have it, I have the answer to the test that you all took last week. How you all think you did? Be honest, nobody will not judge you :)
When I took the test I only got a few right but taking thid test was not about knowing what you know, it was about what you wanted to learn to make.

The Answers are:

  • B. Guacamole is made with avocados that are full of healthful monounsaturated fat. Sour cream, on the other hand, has 8 grams of saturated fat in ¼ cup, which is equivalent to the amount found in 6 slices of bacon!
  • B. Salmon is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, a specific type of polyunsaturated fat that is thought to be one of the best fats for heart health. Although chicken, especially grilled, is not going to be a bad choice, it doesn't pack the same healthy-fat punch as salmon.
  • A. Peanut butter is made from peanuts, and nuts are great source of unsaturated fats (but make sure to read the ingredient list and avoid spreads with bad-for-your-health hydrogenated oils). Cream cheese, similar to sour cream, comes from an animal source, and therefore is higher in saturated fat.
  • A. Trail mix is usually full of nuts, which contain lots of heart-healthy fats. Baked chips offer little in terms of fat, good or bad.
  • B. Olive oil, like other vegetable oils, is going to have a healthier fat profile than butter. An easy way to remember this is that healthier fats tend to be liquid at room temperature (i.e., oils like olive, canola, and safflower); and not-so-healthy fats are solid at room temperature (i.e., butter, margarine, and shortening).
  • A. Balsamic vinaigrette is typically going to have a healthy oil base. The low-fat ranch, even though lower in total fat, is usually made with sour cream and/or mayonnaise and will still have a gram or two of saturated fat. Ranch will provide less of the more healthful fats.

I hope you guys had a fun time with this test, maybe I will do this more often, have you guys brain working.

Time to take a test

Now I know that y'all are tired of reading.... and reading....... and reading. Well, I have a test for y'all to take, so have fun and be honest :)

The following are some scenarios where you have the option of two high-fat foods. Which selection is going to provide you with the healthiest fat?

(Find the answers at the end of the quiz.)

  1. You are eating at your favorite Mexican food restaurant. Which fajita topper would be the best choice?
    1. sour cream
    2. guacamole
  2. Sitting down for a nice dinner at the local steak house, you are trying to decide on an entrée from the grilled selections. Which do you choose?
    1. chicken
    2. salmon
  3. Grabbing a bagel as you run out the door in the morning, what is your spread of choice?
    1. peanut butter
    2. cream cheese
  4. You get the munchies in the middle of the day at work. What do you select from the vending machine?
    1. trail mix
    2. baked chips
  5. While waiting on your pasta to arrive, you start nibbling on some bread. Do you eat it with butter or olive oil?
    1. butter
    2. olive oil
  6. You've decided to stick to a light lunch and order a salad full of lots of fresh vegetables. Which of these dressings is going to add an extra nutritional punch to your meal?
    1. balsamic vinaigrette
    2. low-fat ranch

Keep in mind that no matter how healthy the fat, it is going to be naturally dense in calories. This means that you need to keep portion sizes of fats small to avoid unnecessary calories which could result in unwanted weight gain.

To get the answer to the test, read my next week blog to get see ya!!!!

OBESITY : A Major Crisis

Obesity has been the biggest (no pun intended) word on the street these days. Good thing, because this is a serious topic. I was reading this one article that said in England, the British government wants to mandate exercise for children under five (even those who cant yet walk).

It seems a little crazy to me at first, I mean, that's what we usually do as kids, we go outside to play and run around. But I like the fact that the British government want to enforce patterns that can help stop obesity it as soon as possible and that they're concerned about their country and the people in it. My view, though, is that it takes the parents to want to listen and change their patterns also. I know for a fact that some parents will just keep doing what they been doing, which is allowing their children to sit and watch t.v. or play video games and eat junk food all day.
How can babies who cant even walk be expected to exercise? Swimming classes with their mommy and daddy! And this is something fun to do with your child, to exercise and to bond at the same time. I think the United States need to start enforcing this rule also, BEFORE the children turn five, not after.

I found another article talking about how the U.S. government is thinking adding obesity to the list of why children would be removed from their home and placed in foster care. In my opinion this is beyond wrong and messed up. So, the question is, should parents lose custody of super obese child? Why would anybody do that, that would hurt the parent and and their child. Now the American Medical Association say that it should be temporary and it's already happened three times in the U.S. The purpose of this isn't to blame parents, but to actually help the child, because the parent can't provide the healthy meals and lifestyle that the child needs.

Dr. David Ludwig, an obesity specialist at the Harvard-affiliated Children's Hospital, Boston stated "Out of medical concern, the state placed this girl in foster care, where she simply received three balanced meals a day and a snack or two and moderate physical activity," Ludwig said. After a year, she lost 130 pounds. Today, she remains in foster care and though she is still obese, her diabetes and apnea have disappeared". Even thought she still obese she ended many of her health issues that would've killed her. So after reading this viewpoint, to me, this law is a good thing to because it helps keep a child alive and healthy.

My view overall, though, is that it takes the parents to want to listen and change their patterns also. I know for a fact that some parents will just keep doing what they been doing, which is allowing their children to sit and watch t.v. or play video games and eat junk food all day.

What Is Natural Flavors?

Today i went out to get something to drink, i took a look at the ingredients and it listed: Juice from white grape, pomegranate, and lemon juice concentrates, sparkling water....not so bad, right?
It then went on to list: Natural flavors, Natural colors, and the flowing B-complex vitamins: Niacin amide and vitamin B-12 carbonated added.
As i came across the words "Natural Flavors" I really did think to myself, "Natural, okay, it must be healthy or good for me to ingest." I started doing some research, and went on to learn a whole lot about what this seemingly harmless ingredient actually is!

Natural Flavors is another word for "food enhancer", another form of MSG. It gives flavor to processed foods that lose almost all flavor through the processes of freezing, dehydrating, and canning. It is made from infinitesimal amounts of chemicals, or more so, a collection of gases. There may be a combination of thousands of gases that make up one complex aroma (such as coffee). It is actually these gases that we smell as they are released from the food while we chew it, and thereby we taste the flavor of our food. Making us addicted and willing to buy another one just to fulfill our taste bugs. Little do we know what these addictions can cause,Headaches, having Cancer, Heart Disease and other diseases. So the next time you see Natural Flavors on the back in the ingredients be aware of what your putting in your body.

Healthy Summer Treats

Since its the summer, we have a lot more time on our hands as young people. What are we going to do to stay healthy and not eat so much at the BBQ's and family gatherings? I found some healthy and delicious foods that I think many would love:

Grilled vegetables: Just throw some hardy vegetables, like bell peppers, onions, and zuchini and you have a fantastic treat..

Chilled soups: you can pick up chilled soup like Gazpacho and Chilled Cucumber-Mint from vendors at your local farmer markets.

Watermelon: it's a healthy and cooling treat to enjoy during the hot summer.

Fresh Fruit: Peaches are season and so are cherries! Get them at their peak! Always go for fruit that's IN season, you will be a lot happier with the flavor you taste (I promise).

Iced tea or lemon water: Instead of drinking juice or soda during the summer try this refreshing treat!

Salads: You don't have to eat your average salad with lettuce, there are so many wonderful recipes, check out this collection of beautiful salads!

I hope you take in the suggestions of different and healthy choices to eat over the summer. I will make an effort to keep these delicious choices to eat over this summer.

Just Can't Have One

I constantly try to give up on my beloved potato chips. I say I'm going to start watching the foods that I eat. I eat healthy and think healthy when it comes to food I prepare for myself. But when it comes to snacking, I sure am quick to grab a candy bar or a bag of chips. Meaning, I'm not always thinking healthy.

And just because we're not "fat" doesn't mean that we're healthy. If I was asked today if I'm healthy or not, I would say that I'm not. The outside might appear to be okay, when actually, your insides are shriveled up.

So, I wonder how many people are aware of this action that is very common among those around you. I can honestly say that I feel ashamed of my issue of denial of my addiction to junk food (primarily potato chips).
I think sometimes this happens because of the parents also. I know that I have seen parents who know they need to cut back on a certain type of snack food, but in a pinch (especially when the child is crying or having a tantrum) they give them that same snack to avoid a situation.
I think we can make a change starting with one person at a time, starting with my self to end this hunger and craving for junk food. Here is a website that has 7 healthy ways to end this craving for junk food.

Youth Speak Out Against Childhood Obesity Conference

So, at the Childhood Obesity Conference in San Diego, the youth came together and had a the Conference had nothing to do young people! Some youth had said that the sessions were not youth friendly, and there was a need for more youth presenters.
"I feel like I'm on the outside, looking in," expressed one young person. Other feelings were that the adults talk too much, and need to interact better with the audience. We felt that the main point of the Childhood Obesity Conference was to learn ideas and take them back to our communities, to make our communities better. But all the session were just research and there were not solutions offered.
"Where are all the young people? I mean, this is a CHILDHOOD Obesity Conference, it doesn't make sense that there are none here," Yohan Callan discussed. Along with that confusion, there was an expectation of eating healthy food during the entire trip. Unfortunately, only two meals were provided, and the only locations in walking distance were unhealthy options, like Friday's or Art's Crab Shack.
Overall, we felt like they should be recognized because they have to worked twice as hard to get where we are now. Being at that Conference was like nap time because it was all "blah blah blah;" you had to keep going to the bathroom to stay awake. The adults who were on the panel session also seemed like they were just trying to rush through all these facts and numbers and percentages.
We also felt pretty used! Keynote speakers were taking photos with us just to make them look better, and seem more youth-friendly in the eye of the public.
To come to a conclusion, us youth of thought an ideal conference that includes: More activities like Zumba, outdoor activities, sessions should be solution oriented, not just research sharing, simplify words, make sentences shorter, have adults interview youth at the conference on scholarship because they have actually made changes in their community, and scholarship winners be appreciated throughout the day.
So, what's the youth next step to fix these problems? Well we have decided to share our feedback with the conference organizers and implement changes.
